Lilo & Stitch: A Tale of Friendship, Family, and Ohana

Another beloved Disney film is joining the family of live-action remakes, or maybe we should say, the “ohana.” Disney is releasing a live-action version of Lilo & Stitch in 2025, just under 25 years after the original film’s release. The film tells the story of a young Hawaiian girl who adopts a new “dog” and learns that Stitch is a genetically modified animal that is sought after throughout the galaxy. Here is all you need to know about the upcoming Lilo & Stitch film before Stitch is causing a stir in theaters come springtime.

Lilo and Stitch Plot

Following the original plot, Lilo & Stitch 2025 plays out as a sci-fi comedy intercut with a family drama. After losing her parents, Lilo Pelekai is now under the care of her older sister, Nani Pelekai (sad expression). The splashdown of Stitch, an illegal extraterrestrial that obliterates its surroundings more quickly than a rock band from the 1970s, however, throws her a lifeline (cue laughter!).

Everyone wants a piece of Stitch, just like E.T. and Gizmo did before him. The previously stated Dr. Jumba Jookiba is at the front of the line. The United Galactic Federation, however, poses a much greater threat when it dispatches Agent Pleakley, its top extraterrestrial spy, to reclaim the furball. Lilo and Stitch must keep one step ahead of the pursuing group.

Lilo & Stitch Release Date

On May 23, 2025, Lilo & Stitch will be released in cinemas. But getting to that point has been a hard journey. Discussions on a live-action Lilo & Stitch remake began in 2018, and the project has been in the works ever since. Although Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) ended up directing the adaptation, Wicked director John M. Chu was considered in 2020. It wasn’t clear for a while if Lilo & Stitch would ever be released in theaters; the film was only scheduled to have its Disney+ premiere in 2022.

Lilo and Stitch Trailer

On March 12, 2025, Disney unveiled the official Lilo & Stitch trailer, and to be honest, it had every element that fans had dreamed of. The trailer has it all, whether it was the sci-fi atmosphere, humor, emotional depth, or vivid graphics.  It’s no surprise that after a few hours, it became popular on X and other social networking sites.  Additionally, on the first day of its release, 158 million people watched it.

In addition to bringing back fond memories, the trailer’s contemporary imagery and Stitch’s computer-generated imagery also won over fans. Some of the devoted fan base thought the teaser was an unneeded reimagining of the highly regarded 2002 animated picture, while others expressed their joy on social media.

Lilo & Stitch Live-Action Runtime and Rating

The Lilo & Stitch live-action film would last for one hour and forty-two minutes.  The film has a PG classification, meaning that some situations might not be appropriate for all children and that parental supervision is advised.  In addition, Lilo & Stitch will have to contend with the most formidable opposition because Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will be released concurrently.

Lilo and Stitch Live Action Cast

After directing The Wild Robot last year, Chris Sanders, who dubbed Stitch in the original film, is currently on a hot run. Hollywood has seen significant changes since 2002. Holden Sasaki of ScreenRant thinks that his comeback to the voice booth is significant. “Stitch’s unique and humorous voice was one of the things that made him such a likable character in the first movie, and fortunately, by bringing him back, Stitch will maintain the same energy that he brought to the first movie.”

You will recognize Zach Galifianakis from The Hangover as Dr. Jumba Jookiba, Hannah Waddingham from The Fall Guy as the extraterrestrial head of the United Galactic Federation, and Tia Carrere from Wayne’s World as Cobra Bubbles, the social worker who assists Lilo’s family. In other news, the live-action Lilo & Stitch cast prioritizes up-and-coming artists above megastars. Sydney Elizebeth Agudong portrays Nani, Lilo’s older sister, while Maia Kealoha plays Lilo. Billy Magnussen from Game Night portrays Agent Pleakley, while Kaipo Dudoit plays David, Nani’s college mate.

Conclusion

By fusing sci-fi adventure with the profound themes of family and belonging, the live-action Lilo & Stitch offers a touching resuscitation of a Disney classic. It intends to enchant both new viewers and devoted fans with its lively graphics, new cast, and nostalgic callbacks. It is a real celebration of ohana, where no one is left behind, and is scheduled for publication in May 2025.
